22. Anne Winslow: Enduring, Surviving, and Helping Others

Webster’s Online Dictionary defines compassion as: “Sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” Anne is the consummate definition of compassion, which some might consider incongruous considering her past; Anne endured 30 years of incestuous rape and marital emotional violence, death threats, and sexual assault. Yet, despite all of that, she has become one of the most compassionate and powerful advocates for victims of rape and sexual assault that you would ever hope to meet. It has been a long, difficult journey for Anne on her trauma recovery and survivorship road, but one that she feels has been full of blessings and hope along the way.

Anne attributes much of her ongoing healing to her therapist, and much of it to the support of her children and grandchildren, with whom she enjoys spending loving, support-filled time. She’s a mother to six adult children, and a grandmother of 4 (3 boys and a girl) and is excitedly looking forward to another baby granddaughter that's due July 4th. She owned a home daycare in Germany and has taught children in regular and special-ed classes in New York, California, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Currently, she’s working in a daycare center with preschoolers through 6th grade, while at the same time is attending seminary for independent Catholic Churches, with her goal of becoming a deacon, and then a priest. She hopes to implement a trauma-informed ministry to help undo the damage that faith communities knowingly or unknowingly impose on victims and survivors of sexual abuse and teach those in the faith community how to better minister to those victims and survivors.

It was a true pleasure to interview Anne…I believe you will gain from listening to her, as I did. Please share this episode with everyone you know; it may be just the interview that someone you know needs to hear. Please do your part to bring justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault, because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault. And don’t forget to Start by Believing.
